K-5 Visual Arts Standards

All skills developed at each grade level are considered to be cumulative.

Visual Arts - Standard 1, 2 & 3: Creating - Students will organize, develop and generate artistic ideas and work, through the use of media, techniques and processes.

KINDERGARTEN

  • Introduction to a variety of media.

  • Introduction to a variety of basic techniques.

  • Introduction to a variety of media and processes used to communicate ideas and stories.

  • Introduction to art media and tools to be used in a safe and responsible manner.

  • Use a wider variety of media.

  • Use a wider variety of techniques.

  • Use multi-step processes.

  • Improve and develop desired consistency with new and previously introduced media, processes and techniques.

  • Use the art media and processes to further express, and communicate ideas, feelings, experiences and stories.

  • Use new and existing media in a responsible manner

  • Describe how different media, techniques and processes cause different effects and responses.

  • Use observation and investigation to manipulate materials, processes and techniques, in the creation of art work.

  • Use media, techniques and processes and relate them to objects in everyday life.

  • Use art vocabulary and peer discussion to elaborate on emerging ideas.

  • Introduce and elaborate on the elements and principles of design.

  • Introduce and elaborate on color theory.

Visual Arts - Standard 4, 5 & 6: Presenting - Students will analyze and interpret artistic work for presentation.

KINDERGARTEN

  • Introduce students to the presentation of their art work in an exhibition setting.

  • Prepare works of art to be displayed in an exhibition.

  • Identify and explain the place and purpose for displaying art work.

  • Discuss the various considerations required to display two-dimensional and three dimensional art work.

  • Analyze the various considerations for art work selection and presentation.

  • Introduce the multiple locations in which art work would most commonly be displayed.

Visual Arts - Standard 7, 8 & 9: Responding - Students will analyze and evaluate artistic work for how the visual imagery influences their responses to the world.

KINDERGARTEN

  • Recognize art work in their environment.

  • Distinguish between images and real objects.

  • Identify the imagery found in art work.

  • Determine their preferred type of art work.

  • Describe the representation of an image

  • Discuss imagery that represents similar ideas and messages.

  • Discuss and compare the way peers perceive the imagery based on their experiences.

  • Identify the difference between natural and constructed environments.

  • Recognize the characteristics of relevant subject matter within the art work.

  • Relate art work to historical and cultural contexts.

Visual Arts - Standard 10 & 11: Connecting - Students will synthesize and relate knowledge, personal experiences, cultural and historical context to make art and deepen their understanding of artistic ideas.

KINDERGARTEN

  • Recognize that art is a creative process.
